Preparing & Installing Windows with QEMU/UTM (arm64)

Requirements

Creating a bootable installer ISO

  1. Go to UUP dump
  2. Select a release type (i.e. Latest Public Release build) and architecture, mind the version (10 vs. 11)
  3. Choose a language
  4. Select/deselect Editions
  5. Select a download method, i.e. Download and convert to ISO
  6. Create download package
  7. It will download a zip containing some scripts. To be able to process these, you need some tools.
    brew install aria2 cabextract wimlib cdrtools
  8. Enter the folder and execute
    bash uup_download_macos.sh

Configure UTM

  1. Create a new machine
  2. Under System
    1. Architecture arm64
    2. At least 4 GB of RAM
    3. UEFI Boot
    4. CPU cores: 4
    5. Force Multicore
  3. Under Drives
    1. add removable drive
    2. create hard disk image (at least 50 GB) (NVMe)
  4. Under Network
    1. Network Mode: Shared Network

Installation

  1. Select the ISO created earlier
  2. Start the machine and press any button when prompted
  3. On the Install now screen, hit Shift+F10
  4. Enter regedit
  5. Go to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup
  6. Add a new key LabConfig and go there
  7. Add a new DWORD (32-bit) called BypassTPMCheck with the value 1
  8. Add a new DWORD (32-bit) called BypassSecureBootCheck with the value 1
  9. Quit and continue the installation
  10. If there is any error (cannot install required files), restart the VM and retry
  11. After it's done, attach and install the SPICE Guest Tools
